Women's League Begins Season

The league has a full contingent of 129 games on Monday and Thursday evenings between now and Feb. 23. Games are played at the historic Old Junior High Gym on Park Lane and at the DPR gym on Fairground Road.
All players in the Women's League are at least 18 years old, and teams have a minimum of seven on the roster. There are two divisions of play in the local league. Tournaments for both A and B Divisions are planned for late February-early March, 2012.
The ShowMe Times welcomes photographs and information on DPR Women's League action though out the season. Score, information games and photos may be sent to SMT's Sports Editor Andrew Cato.

Bearcats Set For Red & Black Duel

The Red & Black Duel, held at the DHS Gym (attached to the High School Lobby), will be open to the public and is set to get underway at 6:00 p.m. The cost of admission will be a canned food item or a package of disinfecting wipes, all of which will be donated to a local food bank.
Make sure to come out and support the Bearcats and a great cause!

8th Grade Bearcats Are SCAA Champs

BELL CITY - The Dexter Bearcats were well represented in the final night of the Middle School SCAA Tournament, with the seventh grade squad facing off against the Puxico Indians in the third-place game, and the eighth graders facing the Bloomfield Wildcats in the championship game.
The young Bearcats’ defense was dominant throughout the entire contest with Puxico, as they held the Indians to single-digits in the first three quarters of the game. Everyone in the DMS starting five found the basket in the opening frame, but the Bearcats’ offense exploded in the second quarter, led by Jason Jarrell’s 15 point effort.
Gavin Northcutt led the ‘Cats with 7 points in the third quarter, while teammate Jackson Babb hit a trey in the fourth.
Puxico’s offense surged in the fourth quarter, racking up 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Dexter’s commanding lead, as the ‘Cats went on to a 55-42 victory to claim third place in the tournament.
In the eighth grade contest, the ‘Cats jumped out to a quick lead after an Ethan Flowers trey ball, but Bloomfield kept the game within reach, with Dexter holding a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.
Jacob Pedigo put up 8 points in the second quarter, and with the help of an Austin Chesser three, the ‘Cats took off to a 28-13 lead at halftime.
Cole Renken and Chandler Young both dominated the boards in the contest, and both of Dexter’s ‘bigs’ had buckets in the third quarter to help the ‘Cats to a 39-19 lead.
Alex Whitehead came off the bench and hit a big three in the fourth quarter, while Tyler Heil came in with a bucket to help finish off the Wildcats and crown the Bearcats SCAA Champs.
The Bearcats will have a few days off before their next game - the two squads will be in action again on Monday (Nov. 21) when they host the Poplar Bluff Mules.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Taylor's 19 Point Effort Leads Owls To Big Win

Dexter native Ashlee Taylor led all scorers on the night with 19 points, including a pair of late-game trey balls to seal the win, while Sharron Andrews (Oakland/Hayward, Calif.) posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The eight-point margin doesn't tell the story however, as the game saw 13 lead changes and eight ties. William Woods came out of the blocks a bit slow but were able to recover, leading for most of the first stanza. The Owls took a 25-24 lead into the locker room at half.
The second half was a whirlwind, however, as neither team seemed able to stretch the lead beyond a single possession. After Taylor drained a three-ball with 3:29 on the clock, both teams struggled to find the basket. The Owls would rediscover their touch first, with Taylor draining another trey with 1:17 left. She would add a pair of insurance points down the stretch from the stripe.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday, hosting Baker University as part of the WWU Basketball Alumni weekend. Tipoff for the game is set for 2 p.m.
William Woods University is a four-year, NAIA school located in Fulton, Mo., and is a member of the American Midwest Conference.
DHS Alum Ashlee Taylor is a member of the women’s basketball team.
